Many feel that dogs do not need clothing because they were born with a "built-in" fur coat. Dogs have always existed, and have not worn t-shirts, coats and sweaters..so why now?

Then there are others who enjoy dressing their dogs...simply for the fun of it. They take pleasure in making their dogs look fashionable & cute.

In spite of the varying opinions on the subject, the fact remains that modern dogs do not have to endure the ravages of nature like they did back in the days of wolf packs, and our pet dogs have become accustom to the same climate-controlled environment we enjoy. Ask your vet, and they would agree that a domesticated dog's physiology has adjusted to human environmental standards, so they do need the same protection from the cold as their human counterparts.

The key is in determining two factors: your environment & your dog's type of breed.

Obviously, smaller dogs will need the extra protection from the cold more so than the larger breeds, since they lose heat more quickly than larger dogs - but this does not mean that larger dogs do not need protection as well. Larger dogs, like Great Danes, with short fur require the same level of protection as well from rain and cold. But are we just talking about the colder and rainier months for pet clothing to be necessary?

Did you know that skin cancer is the most common type of cancer among dogs?
Dogs are susceptible to sunburn like humans are. The extra layer that comes from a t-shirt provides UV protection, a barrier to control flea & tick infestation and a place to spray on bug repellant instead of on your dog. Also remember to spray on UV protection on any exposed bare spots on your dog, it will absorb quickly, so no need to worry about your pet licking it off!

And let's not forget the indoor climates during the summer season with the air-conditioning on..dogs, especially small ones like Chihuahuas and Min Pins get cold indoors and will find comfort in a tee or light sweater.

Of course, we are not talking about putting clothes on a Siberian Husky, Great Pyrenees and Saint Bernards - this would be cruel to these dogs, likely making them susceptible to heat stroke! But to the majority of dogs, not only will clothing keep them comfortable, provide a protective barrier and keep them warm...in the bitter cold it can also save their life!
